IoT introduction
Powering the IoT revolution
The Internet of Things and Wearables are rapidly coming of age and becoming an essential part of daily life, whether at work, at home or at play. Taking PCs as a benchmark, smartphone penetration has exceeded that tenfold. IoT is expected to drive wireless penetration further, by a factor of 100 to 1,000. While analysts’ estimates vary, forecasts suggest anything from 21B to 100B devices will be deployed by 2020.
MediaTek is driving this explosion in devices by continuously innovating across a range of systems on a chip (SoCs) to deliver the processing power, battery life, compact size and sensing capabilities at the cost points needed for the mass market.
To help with your IoT device development, MediaTek Labs provides development platforms, complemented by documentation and other development resources, as well as technical and business support. To support the journey to market, partner companies are ready to assist with everything from industrial design to cloud-based data storage and device control.
MediaTek and MediaTek Labs are focused on supporting four key IoT product areas: Wearables, Smart Home, Location Intelligence and M2M.
Wearables
Wearables are expanding from simple fitness trackers into more capable devices that offer features for heart rate and stress sensing from an array of multiple sensing technologies. With not just personal use but with governments, health insurers, healthcare providers and employers looking to these devices to improve care and lower costs, IDC is forecasting Wearables shipments exceeding 200M by the year 2025.
MediaTek products offer the connectivity, low power consumption, compact SoC size and location acquisition features needed for a broad range of Wearables.
